I was reading over at Dr. Helen about people that become unhinged with political passion and throw rational thinking out the door. It sure seems like this phenomenon has expanded over the last several years. It is difficult for me to understand how someone can judge another’s character based solely on their political choice.
So there you are talking with a new acquaintance and sharing commonalities, smiling and laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Maybe the thought crosses your mind that this new person would make a good friend to hang out with, and then it happens – he or she discovers you are a Republican. And that’s the end of that. In my case being gay doesn’t help matters either, particularly when it comes to meeting other gay people. It’s truly baffling.
What is it exactly that liberal Democrats do not like about Republicans? It doesn’t bother me that their political beliefs are somewhat different from my own. My experience is that we are more similar than different in our views. In fact, for all these years we have been barked at with the mantra that we are all much more similar than different, and it is our prejudices that continue to limit our experiences. The more I have attempted to follow the liberal rules governing behavior and thought, the more I am confounded by the inconsistencies. Oh, that would be irreconcilable ideas.
